Bundle Up: How to Dress For Winter Fishing
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…and that’s not just because the holidays are just around the corner. In fact, for anglers, the cold season of winter brings with it some of the best fishing opportunities of the year.
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, if you want to make the most out of your winter fishing experience, there are certain ways that you need to dress for success. Here are our top tips on how to get clothed for cold weather angling.
When it comes to winter fishing clothing, layering is key. Start with a base layer such as long johns or thermals and then add layers on top depending on how cold it is outside. Fleece tops and bottoms are ideal mid-layers since they trap in heat while still allowing sweat to evaporate – but make sure that any fabrics that touch your skin are warm and breathable too.
The last layer should be waterproof and windproof; think snow pants, waterproof coats or jackets and insulated boots.
It’s not all about what you wear on your body – accessories can also help keep you warm when temperatures dip below freezing. A good beanie or hat will help keep your head warm (it’s important not to ignore this part as much heat escapes through your head). Mittens rather than gloves will keep your hands warmer too, so consider investing in a pair of insulated mittens which have been designed specifically for outdoor activities like ice fishing.
Don’t forget scarves either; these provide extra insulation around your neck area which helps lock in warmth further up towards your head and face too.
No matter how well layered up you may be, accidents can happen – especially when participating in extreme sports like ice fishing. So make sure that before heading out onto frozen lakes or rivers that you have all necessary emergency items packed away including a spare set of clothes (in case yours get wet) plus food supplies like energy bars just in case conditions become more extreme than expected.
It also pays to carry an emergency shelter such as a tent with you too – just in case bad weather rolls in unexpectedly whilst out on the water.
