Cheaters Sentenced

Sentenced

They were sentenced to 10 days in jail and had their fishing licenses suspended for using weights and meat to make walleye fish they caught heavier during a Cleveland fishing tournament last year.

The fishing licenses of Jacob Runyan, 43, and Chase Cominsky, 36, were suspended for three years, the maximum suspension period, on Thursday. They were sentenced to 10 days local incarceration and one and a half years’ community control.

As part of their fine, they must donate $2,500 to a reputable charity that helps children and fishermen, and they must forfeit Cominsky’s boat, estimated at $130,000, used during the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament in September 2022, in accordance with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley.

In March, Runyan and Cominsky pleaded guilty to cheating, with forfeiture of the boat seized in October and a fourth-degree misdemeanor charge of unlawful ownership of wild animals.

Sentenced

“I have no doubt that these two crooks cheated in multiple tournaments over the last several years. Unfortunately, we can only hold them accountable for what they did on Sept. 30, 2022,” O’Malley said in a statement. “Although these two deserve to have their fishing license suspended for life, the law only allows a maximum of three years. These two should be banned from every fishing tournament for life. They are thieves and now they are convicted felons. This sends a message to the fishing community that cheaters will be held accountable in Cuyahoga County.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, Runyan and Cominsky competed at the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament near North Marginal Road and Lakeshore Boulevard in Cleveland on Sept. 30, 2022.

There was a tournament in Lake Erie to determine which team caught five of the heaviest walleye fish. If Runyan and Cominsky had won, they would have received a total prize of $28,760.

After seeing Runyan and Cominsky’s walleyes weighed more than they appeared, the tournament director, Jason Fischer, sliced open the fish, which contained ten weights: eight weighing 12 ounces, two weighing 8 ounces, as well as several prepared walleye filets. They were immediately disqualified and ordered to leave.
