This Bait Caught a GIANT Fish!
To land a giant you need a giant bait, even if that bait seems a little too big for the water you are fishing in. You’d be surprised at just how large an appetite some predatory game fish can have. It is uncommon for them to eat more than you think.
As for today’s viral video, the angler has a whole dead crappie he wants to use as bait. It’s not a monster crappie, but it’s large enough for bait.
Crappies may not seem like the best bait, but it doesn’t take long for the angler’s rod to be bent over double with something large on the end.
It’s always exciting to hook into some unknown fish while using a bait of this caliber. We’re not surprised that it was a flathead catfish that tried to eat the crappie.
They don’t always take a dead bait like this; but when they do, the angler on the other end of the line is in for a real fight.
If you find the right area, just about anything can be used for bait. You do need to exercise a little caution, as some states do have rules regarding the use of game fish as bait. You may, however, find that panfish can elicit bites from predatory fish that have already seen other bait.
Flat Head Catfish
Flathead catfish are only preyed upon by members of their own species and humans who catch them for commercial or recreational purposes.
Fishermen often hook large specimens of flathead catfish that put up a tough fight. They are freshwater catfish, and they are not known for their looks.
Many areas of the world are home to flathead catfish, which can grow relatively quickly if they are naturally occurring or transplanted. Flathead catfish can grow to a size of between 10 and 15 pounds, but some fishermen have caught specimens up to 20 pounds. In pristine waters, a flathead catfish that weighs over 50 pounds is possible.
