Video: Bow-Fishers Catch Record Breaking Koi

Growing up in Michigan, I can tell you for certain that there is just something about fishing on the lakes up there.

Even now, years since I have had a chance to get up there with enough time to go fishing I am still perpetually planning a fishing trip of some kind in my head to at least one or two different lakes.

One thing that a lot of the lakes in Michigan have to deal with is the threat of invasive species.

For all the good that comes with the state of Michigan being a paradise for sportsmen, there is the issue of there being so many people that arrive to fish, hunt, and engage in other outdoor activities that at some point a nonnative species will end up in a lake.

I mean, how many times has it happened there and in other places that someone would drop a fish from somewhere else out of a bowl and right into a lake to upset the natural ecosystem?

There are several lakes in the state that are starting to get overrun with koi.

One of those is Glen Lake. I have been on Glen Lake before and I have to tell you the view from anywhere on the lake is absolutely stunning.

However, they do have that pesky issue with koi.

Which means that they have been inviting fishermen of all kinds and methods in to go after these koi. Bowfisherman seem to have had the best luck.

For example, a story intimated to us by Richard O’Malley mentioned that there was recently a koi caught that you would need a pretty big pond for.

This gargantuan koi weighed in at twenty-four and one-half pounds, which is believed to be a world record when it comes to the bow fishermen that have been helping thin the population of the koi out in the area.

This record-breaking catch also highlights the need for responsible koi ownership. People do need to be more educated on the species and realize that they are buying a pet and not something that can just be dumped in a lake the second it gets too big.

That kind of thing will upset a whole area’s ecosystem.
