Massive Whale Watching Event-Video

Whales are absolutely majestic creatures. I remember when I was in the military that every once in awhile you would see one if you were out to sea long enough.

Thankfully, it seems that the practice of whaling has fallen so far out of fashion that I cannot even think off the top of my head of any countries except for maybe Japan that still engage in the practice.

Which of course means that more and more whale sightings are going to take place.

One of these sightings happened recently in Boston Harbor.

To say that it thrilled both locals and visitors from other places would be a massive understatement.

Some of those folks were Coast Guard cadets that were spending some time in Massachusetts.

“When we saw it, it was great. Then it came really close. So we got a lot of good shots,” said Paul Song, a U.S. Coast Guard cadet visiting Boston on board the Cutter Eagle.

Their ship was anchored in Boston Harbor this week when the cadets on board saw a stunning humpback whale.

For some of the people on board, it was the first time that they had the chance to be that close to a whale.

“I’m from the Midwest,” Song said. “We don’t really see whales out there, so it was nice to be able to get out here and actually be able to see wildlife.”

By and large, the whales are drawn to the harbor by the abundance of bait fish, and find themselves putting on a show of sorts for anyone within sight of them.
The idea that these animals were hunted in the numbers that they were for so many years is absolutely stunning that it went on that long.
Thankfully there are measures in place that will prevent this kind of thing from happening.

As far as myself goes, I probably won’t see a whale again anytime soon given that I live primary near a lake.
But I sure as heck hope the people that saw them in Boston Harbor know how special a moment it was.
