Disabled Fishermen Get BIG News
One thing that I have always loved about fishing is that it is something that basically anyone can do.
Depending on the circumstances, I would say that pretty much anyone with control of at least one of their hands can spend a day fishing.
This premise is something that I was thinking about when I was helping one of my aunts clean out my grandmother’s old house a couple of months ago to get it ready for sale after she passed away.
We were looking through some old photos and found one that my grandmother took of me when I was fishing with my grandfather at the end of a pier.
Grandpa was a World War Two veteran, that left Michigan fit as a fiddle and came back leaving part of his left thigh somewhere in North Africa.
As he got older, his mobility was a little less and less. He could still get around, but he wasn’t exactly going to be doing much of anything of an athletic nature.
However, he could still sit in a chair and he could still hold things with his hands so he got heavy into fishing.
My God, during salmon season here in Michigan he would bring his camper up and he and my grandma would just stay in our backyard for a month.
One of the things that disabled veterans need is something to keep them active. I have seen far too many disabled vets end up in bad situations because quite simply, they didn’t have anything to do.
It’s one of the reasons why I am so glad to be hearing news out of the state Oklahoma.
The owner of Wade’s RV Supercenter is partnering with the state to pay for free lifetime fishing and hunting licenses for disabled veterans.
That means that any disabled veteran that wants one can get one.
Anytime they might need something to do, any time they might be having a down day, they can get out to a lake or a river, and just spend a little bit of time fishing.
It’s a much bigger deal to have something to do than people truly realize.
