Watch: Kayaker’s Near-Death Experience with Shark

This one fisherman experienced something just short of a miracle after he had a near-death run-in with a huge shark while kayaking. And lucky for us, the whole thing was caught on camera in a heart racing clip that has gone viral online.

The ocean is an amazing place full of life and mystery, but one thing we know for sure is that it can be dangerous. This was the case for Scott Haraguchi on a Friday afternoon while he was fishing in his kayak just off the coast of Kualoa, Hawaii.

Thanks to an accident with his GoPro camera, we were able to capture a harrowing encounter between Scott and a large tiger shark.

Scott had decided to spend his Friday afternoon out fishing in shallow waters about one mile offshore from Kualoa. He had started recording himself with his GoPro after catching a fish, leaving it running when he forgetfully meant to turn it off.

Little did he know that this mistake would provide us with incredible footage of what happened next.

The 42 seconds of footage shows Scott peacefully making his way through the crystal blue waters as the windward side of Oahu provided gentle breezes. Suddenly, there’s movement in the upper left corner of the frame and before you can make out what’s headed towards him, a massive tiger shark emerges and slams into Scott’s kayak.

You can hear him screaming as it latches onto his vessel narrowly missing him- thankfully all caught on camera.

After impact it looked like things were only getting worse for Scott as the hungry predator seemed determined not to let go- that is until Scott managed to give it a shove with his shoe near its vulnerable eye region at around 11 seconds into the video. It worked.

The shark swam away allowing Scott time enough to take some deep breaths and collect himself before going back to fishing again – talk about bravery. He later admitted that although he was very scared during the incident, only after watching back the video did he realize how close he came to being injured or worse by such an apex predator.
