Teen Hooks Giant Squid, Looks Closer and Makes a Horrifying Discovery

Imagine taking time off from school to enjoy some quality time fishing. Now imagine your surprise if you were to catch an entire giant squid on your fishing line…how would you react?

Dom Chandler, a 17-year-old high school student from Bega, New South Wales had an unbelievable experience on the waters off the coast of Tathra. Dom and his friend were out fishing from their 420 Renegade boat when they encountered something so extraordinary that it left them in shock; they had reeled in a giant squid estimated to weigh over 100kg.

But upon closer inspection, what they discovered was pretty horrifying to think about.

The catch came as quite a surprise for the two anglers. Dom explained what happened to 2EC Radio, “I was winding up the line, there was a bit of weight, and then it just let go suddenly and there was a massive squid just floating on the surface”. When the two fishermen flipped it over they noticed puncture marks all over its body which suggested it had been attacked by either a shark or whale before being reeled in.

It was too heavy for them to lift into their boat but Dom reported that its flesh kept ripping which prevented him from doing so. That’s when he realized that it must be dead already.

After taking some photos of his discovery Dom sent them off to a marine biologist to get more information about this species of squid. He believes that because of its size it could have weighed more than 100kg – much larger than what most people are used to seeing.

After this incredible encounter with such an enormous animal, Dom has expressed his intent to search for swordfish during the rest of his holiday trip as well as telling others about this amazing experience.
